Climate Change is Real!

This week's eSkeptic featured an article by Dr. Donald Prothero in which he discusses climate change; how we know it occurring, how we know we are causing it, and why people try to deny it. It is overall a good article and he presents many facts so I recommend you read it in its entirety (this link will skip the heading portion of this week's eSkeptic) but I wanted to focus on one thing he said.

“I agree that climate is changing, but I’m skeptical that humans are the main cause, so we shouldn’t do anything.” This is just fence sitting. A lot of reasonable skeptics deplore the “climate denialism” of the right wing, but still want to be skeptical about the cause. If they want proof, they can examine the huge array of data that directly points to humans causing global warming.²⁰ We can directly measure the amount of carbon dioxide humans are producing, and it tracks exactly with the amount of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Through carbon isotope analysis, we can show that this carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is coming directly from our burning of fossil fuels, not from natural sources. We can also measure oxygen levels that drop as we produce more carbon that then combines with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide. We have satellites in space that are measuring the heat released from the planet and can actually see the atmosphere get warmer. The most crucial proof emerged only in the past few years: climate models of the greenhouse effect predict that there should be cooling in the stratosphere (the upper layer of the atmosphere above 10 km (6 miles) in elevation, but warming in the troposphere (the bottom layer of the atmosphere below 10 km (6 miles), and that’s exactly what our space probes have measured. Finally, we can rule out any other culprits (see above): solar heat is decreasing since 1940, not increasing, and there are no measurable increases in cosmic radiation, methane, volcanic gases, or any other potential cause. Face it—it’s our problem.

I will admit I was at this point for a few years as well but it is the combination of all the evidence that he mentions, along with other pieces of evidence, that eventually made me realize I was wrong. That is how science works and that is why people who are ignoring the science of climate change are wrong.

Help Preserve the Sharktooth Hill Bonebed

While reading this morning's eSkeptic (sign up to receive eSkeptic for free here) I saw this request for help from some very good paleontologists in the L.A. area. While I do not have the ability to help them financially what I do have is a blog to help spread the word so if you can please help them out so we don't lose this important scientific site forever!

We have learned that the world-famous Sharktooth Hill Bonebed fossil locality northwest of Bakersfield, one of the richest and most important sites in the world, is in danger of being sold off to commercial collectors. If this happens, the dealers will excavate it for only the commercially valuable fossils and destroy all the scientific information from the hundreds of sharks, as well as whales and seals and other marine mammals that come from these deposits.

The owner of this land, Bob Ernst (who was a good friend of ours), passed away several years ago suddenly without leaving a will, and his widow is now selling off the fossil-rich property to the highest bidder. Already a lot of important specimens have been sold in auction (including some that were already in a museum collection), and now the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is trying to buy one of the most important parcels of Ernst’s property to hold as a scientific preserve (imagine the Page Museum at La Brea Tar Pits, but for marine life). If the museum can raise another $25,000–30,000, they will buy the land. If we collect more than what they need for the land purchase, it will be applied to Phase II of the project, building a visitor’s center. The goal is to preserve the site, while allowing access to schools and non-profit educational groups to help collect the less scientifically significant shark teeth and whale bones. Just imagine that you had been one of the donors who assisted with the acquisition of the La Brea Tar Pits. This is just that type of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Dr. Prothero on Earthquake Prediction

I have avoided talking about the horrible earthquake in Japan because there are much smarter people than I out there talking much better science than I could. I found one example in this past week's eSkeptic. The article written by Dr. Prothero, a geologist and vertebrate paleontologist at Occidental College in Los Angeles, takes on one of the worst offenders of passing off lies as science.

Among those that got their 15 minutes of fame during the post-quake media blitz was a well-known crank, Jim Berkland, who got a full interview promoting his ideas on Fox News on March 17 (but on no other network). First, the reporter put up a map of the “Ring of Fire” of volcanoes and earthquakes around the Pacific Rim, pointed at Chile, then New Zealand, then Japan, and implied that this circle of quakes might end in California. Apparently, he never consulted a geologist, who would have pointed out that each of those regions is an entirely different type of plate boundary and they have no tectonic plates in common. Then Fox gave Berkland a full five minutes to spout his ideas, with the same credulous reporter tossing him softball questions, and no rebuttal from any other geologist or seismologist.

It is a good article and worth going to read the whole thing. I also want to note that Dr. Prothero is now blogging on the skeptic site so go follow him I am sure he will have some great posts in the future.

Nothing new

So recently a film came out called Darwin: The Voyage That Shook the World and while that may make the video sound like an interesting film but it is apparently by Creation Ministries International and Fathom Media. Yes that's right it's a creationist piece attempting to show how if Darwin knew what we knew now he would not have come up with Evolution. This is nonsense if he knew what we knew now his theory would have been even stronger than it was when he originally wrote it.

eSkeptic Magazine, part of Skeptic magazine, did a feature article on it in this week's issue, if you are not a subscriber to eSkeptic it is free I strongly suggest it (sign up here), discussing the film. They brought in three experts in the field of biology and had them address each of the main claims made in the film. It is a very interesting read and very well done and hopefully should help for in the future when you will probably have many of these claims thrown your way.

What interested me the most about this article was how the claims that the film makes are essentially the same ones that have been made by Creationists for year. Almost all of these have been refuted but they keep using them. It is annoying to address the same claim over and over again but I guess I am not in the demographic that they are targeting.

Michael Shermer's What I Believe

Michael Shermer the editor of Skeptic magazine, and eSkeptic online magazine, something I recomend that everyone subscribe to (its free), put this out yesterday. It is a good read and while I do not agree with everything he says I agree with enough to send it on. Enjoy
